In this article, published in ISSA’s Cleaning & Maintenance Management Magazine, ASL Science Lead Dr. Emer Duffy addresses the issue of carpet care and how correct carpet care can be part of an overall strategy for creating a healthier indoor environment. Indoor air pollution is one of the top five environmental risks to public health, according to the US Environment Protection Agency  and reducing indoor pollutant levels is essential for creating a healthier indoors. Dr. Duffy explains that:

Emer Duffy Science Lead Allergy StandardsCarpet can increase our exposure to air pollutants by acting as a reservoir of allergens. Simply walking over or vacuuming carpet can suspend allergens into the air, where they are inhaled. Allergens that remain on the carpet are often pushed to the bottom of the carpet pile by foot traffic, where they stick to the fibers and are difficult to remove.Regular carpet cleaning is essential for the removal of dirt and allergens. Vacuum cleaners can vary widely in their ability to remove dust and allergens from carpet, depending on suction power and the cleaning head used.

When looking for products that contribute to a healthier indoor environment consider certified products from trusted parties. Check product packaging and manufacturer websites for evidence of independent testing or third-party certification.

Our vacuum cleaner standard is one of 46 standards in the asthma & allergy friendly® Certification Program, covering appliances, bedding products, air filters, building products, and services that can have an impact on the indoor air environment.
