It’s no secret that consumers are demanding products that are safer and healthier for themselves and their families. But many brands are capitalizing on this by making health claims that are scientifically unfounded. This is the reason why independent third-party standards organisation have developed certification labels.
SCS Global Services and Allergy Standards have partnered together to offer services to green building manufacturers who are seeking asthma & allergy friendly® certification for their products.
Here, Allergy Standards’ Digital Marketing Manager, Léa Daulan, interviews Karen Righthand, SCS Global Services‘ Director of Sales and Marketing.
Léa Daulan: About a year ago, Allergy Standards announced that SCS Global Services was now approved to offer the asthma & allergy friendly®. Why did it make sense for the two companies to work together?
Karen Righthand: SCS Global Services (SCS) is a leading standards developer and third-party certification body for recognized green building product certifications, such as FloorScore and Indoor Advantage. We have certified thousands of products for manufacturers all over the world. Consumers can find the products we certify at major retailers, and specifiers use them for LEED and WELL buildings.
Drawing upon our 35 years of experience in the industry, SCS and Allergy Standards are working together to grow the asthma & allergy friendly® certification program by expanding its accessibility in the green building product manufacturing sector globally. SCS is offering consulting services and a path to certification for new and existing clients, with a focus on flooring, insulation and wall paint. We’ve made this service available because we see tremendous opportunity for commercial and residential building product manufacturers to differentiate themselves in their markets through asthma & allergy friendly® certification and meet the growing demand for healthy interiors.
Léa: SCS already offers certification and standards in environmental, sustainability, and food safety. How important was it for you to add the health and wellness aspect of the asthma & allergy friendly® to your portfolio of services?
Karen: SCS is always evolving and expanding our portfolio of services and certifications based on market awareness and demand. People now spend 90% of their time inside, so it is important for us to offer our clients the most comprehensive certifications for wellness in the indoor environment. Indoor air can be two and a half times as polluted as outdoor air,so buildings play a critical role in our overall health. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of what they are introducing into their homes, and more engaged with sustainable and wellness-driven architecture and design. Unfortunately, the marketplace is full of misleading claims on product packaging making it difficult for consumers to differentiate between products. Our role as an independent third-party certification body is to provide information consumers can trust. Building materials that are certified to address indoor air quality, limit exposure to harmful chemicals, and reduce allergens and irritants that can trigger asthma and allergy symptoms contribute to a healthy home environment for everyone. We are excited to see more of these certified products used in commercial buildings.
Léa: What are SCS plans for the future to keep helping manufacturers to produce eco-friendly, sustainable and healthy products?
Karen: We are prioritizing asthma & allergy friendly® certification because it is the world’s only credible mark for products and services that are more suitable for people with asthma and allergies. Products carrying the asthma & allergy friendly® mark have been certified by doctors and scientists to support the needs of people affected by allergies or asthma. All products have undergone rigorous testing to prove the authenticity of their claims and the certification is supported by patient advocacy groups and is trusted by consumers.
Léa: What are the next steps and objectives for 2019 to keep this partnership growing between Allergy Standards and SCS?
Karen: SCS is introducing asthma & allergy friendly® certification first to our flooring customers, as that industry tends to be on the forefront of product innovation. We have over 7,000 flooring products that are FloorScore certified so these manufacturers are very familiar with testing for volatile organic compounds. However, they are less familiar with the allergen removal requirements that are unique to this standard. We will help our customers determine which of their products would be the best candidates for certification and guide them through the process. I’m confident that many of our flooring customers will see the value in having a product offering for their most vulnerable and sensitive customers and for commercial projects focused on health.
We will also be conducting outreach to the paint and insulation industries with a similar approach. We currently have plans for two public presentations at major green building conferences in 2019; Living Product Expo and Greenbuild.
Léa: Thank you.
