This talk explores current and future healthy home trends with a focus on indoor air quality, whole house filtration and the importance of third party certification. IAQ is a key component in the healthy home and builders will benefit by a deeper understanding of how whole house filtration and other asthma and allergy friendly products can help them keep their business healthy.
Indoor Air Quality and Healthy Homes
As society forces shift, new buying behaviours emerge and consumers are becoming more educated about the place they call home. To align with this, builders also must shift the way homes and communities are designed and built. High Performance Homes, in particular, are in demand, but must be designed differently to perform at levels which meet or exceed homeowner demands. Indoor air quality is integral to this desired healthy home. The new concept is people and health centred, rather than building centred. Too often, building materials and products are chosen from a unilateral point of view. This must be broadened so that materials are not just the right choice for the build, but the right choice for the health and well being of the home dweller.Certification
Choosing the appropriate material or product can be confused by the practice of ‘green washing’ or simply by poor science. Third party certification avoids this pitfall by independently and rigorously testing and subsequently certifying only when strict specifications are met. ASL has developed the Asthma & Allergy Friendly®™ mark to identify products that consumers can trust for their relative suitability for people with asthma and allergies.
