Allergy Standards Limited supports World Allergy Week 2026, running 21–27 June, under the World Allergy Organization theme “Allergy Care Is Essential Care.”
This week, Allergy Standards joins the World Allergy Organization (WAO) and allergy communities around the globe in recognising World Allergy Week, running from 21 to 27 June 2026. This year’s theme, “Allergy Care Is Essential Care,” is a call to action that resonates deeply with everything we do at ASL.
Allergic disease is a global public health challenge affecting hundreds of millions of people, shaping daily life, limiting productivity, and in the most serious cases, claiming lives. This week is an opportunity to reflect on the scale of that challenge, and on the role that better environments, better products, and better science can play in supporting those who live with these conditions every day.
The Scale of the Problem
The numbers tell a compelling story. An estimated 30 to 40% of the global population lives with one or more allergic conditions, including asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema, and food allergy. Around 400 million people worldwide have allergic rhinitis alone, making it one of the most prevalent chronic conditions on the planet. In 2019, asthma affected an estimated 262 million people globally and caused 455,000 deaths, with the WHO confirming it remains the most common chronic disease among children worldwide.
These are not abstract statistics. They represent real people, real families, and real communities navigating daily challenges that too often go unacknowledged. WAO’s “Allergy Care Is Essential Care” message asks us to change that, by treating allergies with the seriousness and clinical attention they deserve.
The Indoor Environment: Where It Matters Most
At ASL, our work has always been grounded in a fundamental truth: the environments people inhabit every day have a profound impact on their health. Research consistently shows that people spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, and indoor air pollutant levels can be consistently 2 to 5 times higher than outdoor levels. For those living with asthma or allergies, the quality of that indoor environment is not simply a matter of comfort. It is a matter of health.
Indoor allergens, including house dust mites, pet dander, and mould, are recognised by the WHO as key triggers for both asthma and allergic rhinitis. For the hundreds of millions of people living with these conditions, the quality of their indoor environment is not simply a matter of comfort. It is a matter of health. Air pollution, both indoor and outdoor, contributed to 7.9 million deaths globally in 2023, underscoring just how significant the indoor environment is as a factor in overall wellbeing.
Across the Asia-Pacific region, nearly half of adults with physician-diagnosed allergic rhinitis report impairment in school or work performance, and sleep disturbance is a widely reported quality-of-life impact. Among school-age children in Asia-Pacific, allergic rhinitis is the most common chronic paediatric disorder, associated with increased absenteeism and reduced classroom performance.
How ASL Supports Allergy Care Through Certification
The Asthma & Allergy Friendly® Certification Program, operated by ASL, exists to help address this challenge in a meaningful, science-backed way. By independently testing consumer products against rigorous standards developed by ASL’s scientific team, the program provides a trusted signal to allergy and asthma sufferers that a product has been evaluated for its potential impact on the indoor environment.
Certified products span ten categories: HVAC Air Filters, Air Purifiers, Bedding, Flooring, Insulation, Paint, Steam-Based Clothing Care Systems, Treated Carpet, and Washing Machines. These are the everyday touchpoints of home life, the surfaces slept on, the air breathed, the floors walked on. Getting these right matters.
A New Resource for Our International Partners
In support of World Allergy Week, and to help our certification partners activate meaningful, compliant campaigns across their markets, ASL has developed a comprehensive 2026 marketing pack now available to all active partners.
The pack covers each of the ten certified product categories and includes, for every category:
- A Campaign Treatment Document outlining the campaign theme, messaging, and activation guidance
- Pre-approved social media posts, ready for use across partner channels
- An educational infographic explaining how products in the category are tested and certified, available in relevant languages
- 2026 Allergy and Asthma Statistics covering global data, along with regional subfolders containing localised figures for Canada, Latin America, China, and other key markets
We currently have active certification partners across all ten categories in a range of regions, including global markets as well as APAC, Europe, Canada, Latin America, and other key territories. This pack is designed to ensure that partner communications are grounded in accurate, up-to-date data and aligned with the Asthma & Allergy Friendly® brand standards.
Allergy Care Is Indoor Environmental Care
WAO’s 2026 theme asks us to recognise urgency, prioritise specialist care, and bridge the gap between awareness and everyday management. At ASL, we believe that certified indoor environments and certified products are part of that everyday management. They are not a replacement for clinical care, but they are an important complement to it.
When a person with asthma sleeps on certified bedding, installs a certified air purifier, or lays certified flooring in their home, they are taking a step towards a healthier indoor environment. That step is supported by independent science, verified by rigorous testing, and backed by a global network of certified partners who share our commitment to improving quality of life for those living with asthma and allergies.
This World Allergy Week, we stand with the World Allergy Organization in affirming that allergy care is essential care. We are proud to play our part.
