Comforter/Duvet Covers that are certified Asthma & Allergy Friendly are tested according to the ASP:02-24/101 Comforter/Duvet Cover addendum to the ASP:02-07/101 Sheet Certification Standard.
Comforter/Duvet Covers are not an “encasement” and consumers should not rely on this item for encasement performance. As such Comforter/Duvet Covers are not sufficient allergen barriers alone, but where they adhere to the principles and pass the testing criteria of the ASP:02-24/101 Comforter/Duvet Cover addendum, they are eligible for Asthma & Allergy Friendly Certification when used in conjunction with Certified Duvets/Comforters.
Allergy Standards Limited subjects Comforter/Duvet Covers to physical and chemical testing to ensure that the Comforter/Duvet Cover is not associated with properties that are likely to irritate asthma and/or allergy symptoms in susceptible individuals.
The Asthma & Allergy Friendly Certification mark is awarded to those Comforter/Duvet Cover products that have been scientifically demonstrated to contribute to the goal of allergen reduction.
The Comforter/Duvet Cover addendum includes the following principles:
- The Comforter/Duvet Cover must be an effective barrier to the passage of allergen
- Allergen accumulating on the outer surface of the Comforter/Duvet Cover must be removable by the recommended eradication techniques at stipulated intervals
- The Comforter/Duvet Cover must have the ability to withstand the recommended eradication techniques at the indicated frequency
- The Comforter/Duvet Cover fabric must be “breathable” to ensure user comfort
- The Comforter/Duvet Cover must not contain chemicals known to trigger allergenic or irritant responses when present above Certification levels
- Comforter/Duvet Covers are not sufficient allergen barriers alone, but can be Certified when used in conjunction with an Asthma & Allergy Friendly™ Certified Large Bedding Item (Comforter/Duvet)
All Certified Asthma & Allergy Friendly Comforter/Duvet Covers carry a unique Certification code.
