ASL announces a new addition to its asthma & allergy friendly® standards portfolio: the Robotic Vacuum Cleaner Standard ASP:03-09/101
Allergy Standards Ltd (ASL) has previously developed standards for manually-operated vacuum cleaners under the ASP:03 category. Current testing methods for manual vacuums are not suitable to assess robots in line with the principles of the asthma & allergy friendly® Certification Program, the internationally recognised certification program run in partnership with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). Therefore due to increasing demand from consumers and manufacturers ASL has developed scientific methods to assess how robotic vacuum cleaners impact on the indoor environment.
What are Certification Standards?
Allergy Standards Limited develops certification standards for a variety of product categories, including consumer electronics, textiles, building materials and air filters. These standards are based on scientific research, product testing and consultation with subject matter experts where necessary. All standards are peer-reviewed by a panel of medical experts in the field of asthma and allergy and the final version of the standard is approved by the ASL Scientific Committee. These standards help consumers identify products that contribute to a healthier indoor environment, and they also allow manufacturers and stakeholders aim for meaningful targets and be reassured that they can stand over the claims they are making.
What is the significance of the new standard?
As global leaders in the field of healthy indoor environments and certification standards, this new standard developed by ASL is important as it helps manufacturers of robotic vacuum cleaners to demonstrate that their products meet rigorous allergen removal performance criteria. This will now enable ASL to certify robotic vacuum cleaners as asthma & allergy friendly®. It will mean that companies that pass the standard will be able to join one of our Certification Programs, run with patient advocacy groups in North America and internationally.
“With their innovative technology and intelligent design, the robotic vacuum cleaner is now capable of significantly reducing airborne particles and allergens in the indoor environment,” said Dr. John McKeon. “As AI, robots and smart homes are increasingly playing a role in supporting a healthier indoor environment, this new standard will provide crucial guidance to the air aware consumer and will help manufacturers ensure the production of scientifically tested, certified robotic vacuums.”
Certification Standards and Smart Homes
The announcement coincides with the Consumer Technology Association’s (CTA’s) annual event, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the most influential tech event in the world where the world’s biggest brands do business and meet new partners. CES provides a platform for companies, manufacturers, developers and suppliers of consumer technology hardware, content and technology delivery systems to showcase their innovations. Many of ASL’s clients are exhibiting and participating in this exciting event. Smart home products developed by ASL clients LG, Rabbit Air and 3M and that are Certified to the ASL standards mean that they also contribute to a healthier indoor environment.
ASL have a long standing track record of helping businesses to develop comprehensive in-company learning & development programs with tailored training and customised Learning Management Systems through our ASL Academy.
