ASL’s long-time partnership with Tarkett is much more than simply commercial. It is a collaboration to create and promote a built environment that has a positive impact on people, with human health at its forefront. This collaboration is underpinned by our common aim of finding innovative solutions for healthier materials and healthier indoor environments.
Why CERTIFY flooring?
Over 100 million people in the U.S. have asthma or allergies – many have both – and the rates are rising. We know that exposure to indoor air pollutants can potentially lead to exacerbation of asthma, allergies and other respiratory illnesses. In the case of flooring, the release of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from the flooring itself and any adhesives used in its installation are a factor that can impact on those with sensitive airways. Flooring covers a substantial proportion of a building and so any emissions from flooring can contribute significantly to the quality of the indoor air. Additionally, sticky allergen particles can be more difficult to remove from some types of flooring during cleaning.
Science-backed Certification for a Healthier Indoor Environment
ASL’s certification standards look at the broader impact of flooring on the indoor environment. Assessment measures VOC emissions, but also includes parameters such as allergen removal from flooring by cleaning. Unlike other certifications, our certification goes a further step and assesses emissions during installation of the flooring and also while the flooring is in use. Only those products that pass these stringent tests are awarded the certification.
We certify both resilient flooring and soft surface flooring. Traditionally, some ‘soft surface’ flooring has been considered to be a reservoir for allergens which may become airborne. But recent innovations in flooring technology mean it is possible to combine the comfort of traditional carpet with the cleanability and durability of a resilient or “hard surface” flooring. CERTIFIED asthma & allergy friendly® soft flooring is evaluated using a selection of real allergens and in order for a soft flooring to be CERTIFIED, it must be possible to remove 75% of the allergen from the floor covering through standard cleaning, and it must be possible to maintain low levels of airborne particles.
As the number of people with asthma and allergies continues to increase, so too does the demand for trustworthy products. In a rapidly expanding market, there is a real risk of ‘well washing’, with no science behind product health claims. Run in partnership with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, the asthma & allergy friendly® Certification Program provides clarity and confidence to consumers, allowing them to make informed purchases for healthier homes, schools and workplaces. Importantly, our CERTIFIED flooring products align with USGBC LEED credit requirements for low emitting materials.
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG)
Potential clients of ASL know their market appreciates a better product. They also want to make measurable investments into their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy. Our Certification Program creates competitive advantage by addressing the needs of the millions of Americans who live with asthma and allergies, but it also a great step to maximize a company’s benefits to society. The disproportionate effect of respiratory illnesses on disadvantaged populations has highlighted the importance of a holistic approach when choosing products and building materials to ensure social equity. Certification centers people as part of the design process and through choosing to have your product CERTIFIED, this commitment can be demonstrated in a meaningful way.
Clients of the program are provided with promotional and marketing support, findings from research, and access to extensive educational material. Furthermore, our iAir Academy offers educational courses that cover various aspects of indoor air quality relating to a healthier indoor environment.
