World Standards Day 2026: Spotlight on SDG 7

Every year on October 14, World Standards Day recognizes the experts around the world who develop the international standards behind innovation, quality, and trust. The 2026 theme, “Shared Vision for a Better World: Spotlight on SDG 7,” focuses on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal for Affordable and Clean Energy. It looks at how standards turn that goal into practical solutions that help energy systems run reliably and efficiently.

Energy Efficiency and Indoor Air Go Hand in Hand

Buildings are central to the clean energy transition. Better insulation, airtight building envelopes, and high-performance HVAC systems all reduce the energy needed to heat and cool our homes, schools, and workplaces. As buildings become more energy efficient, though, the quality of the air inside them depends more than ever on ventilation, filtration, and the products and materials we bring indoors.

At Allergy Standards, we believe energy efficiency and healthy indoor environments should work together. Standards make that balance possible.

Science-Based Standards for Healthier Indoor Environments

Founded by Dr. John McKeon, ASL develops scientific standards for products used in the indoor environment. Our globally recognized Asthma & Allergy Friendly® Certification Program, operated with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), verifies that products meet rigorous, science-based standards designed to improve the indoor air environment. Several certified product categories sit at the heart of the energy conversation, including insulation, air filters, and whole home air cleaners. Our testing protocols are aligned with internationally recognized benchmarks such as ISO/IEC 17025, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and credibility.

Through this work, we contribute to key Sustainable Development Goals:

  • SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. Helping manufacturers of energy-related building products, such as insulation and air filtration, show that their products also support a healthier indoor environment.
  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being. Helping to reduce exposure to allergens and irritants in the indoor environment.
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Guiding consumers toward verified, healthier product choices.

A Shared Vision for Healthier, More Efficient Buildings

The energy we save matters, and so does the air we share indoors. As we mark World Standards Day 2026, we join IEC, ISO, ITU, and the global standards community in celebrating the experts who make progress possible. By bringing together medical, environmental, and product science, we continue to set benchmarks that help the buildings of the future be both energy efficient and healthy places to live, learn, and work.
