Hay fever is an allergy to pollen or spores and it can cause the inside of your noseRapeseed Field to become inflamed as well as affecting the sinuses, throat and eyes. For those with hay fever, the condition can range from mildly irritating to debilitating in its effects. Hay fever normally occurs in spring and summer when there is more pollen in the air. However allergy season has been increasing of late and this further exacerbates the problems that hay fever sufferers face.

The message from the asthma & allergy friendlyTM Program is that products that are certified are more suitable for those suffering from asthma and allergies. These products are recommended to be used in a ‘home allergen reduction plan'. But just what is a ‘home allergen reduction plan' and is it really effective?

Textiles Institute LogoThis month I learnt some interesting things, not least that fabrics are now being used on roads nowadays. It's true:  A thin layer of polypropylene is applied to the road's surface to improve its cohesiveness. The source of this and other fascinating facts was the Textile Information Course, provided by the Textile Institute, which is based in Manchester and was established in 1925. The Institute has members in over 80 countries and are experts in the areas of textiles, clothing and footwear and this is the first Information Course they have run in several years.

Toy Fair LondonHong Kong Toy Fair

It is Toy Trade Fair season again and at ASL this is a busy time of the year. Through our certification of a wide range of stuffed toys as asthma & allergy friendlyTM, attendance at these events is of great importance. For a stuffed toy to pass our Certification criteria there are several principles that they need to adhere to (see below). Due to the nature of testing principles where quality of construction and durability are concerned, only toys of the highest quality will be capable of passing testing.

tcdDr. John Mc Keon (CEO of Allergy Standards Limited) and I were invited to attend the recent Higher Education Authority visit to Trinity College Dublin. TCD have made considerable progress with the development of the Trinity Biomedical Research Institute at a site close to the main College Campus and have applied to the HEA for partial funding of the building development. The cost of building development is in the region of €70 million and is hoped to be completed in late 2010.

CPSC Draft Guidelines

timyeomans

The Consumer Products Safety Commission published a draft guideline document earlier this month. The aim of this document is to inform manufacturers and retailers of the testing and certification requirements under the CPSIA 2008. This document is in draft form at the moment and so none of the guidelines have been approved, it does however make for relevant reading.

The Filtech Conference in Wiesbaden, Germany was held last week from Tuesday 13th to Thursday 15th October. Dr. Tim Yeomans from Allergy Standards Limited was among the attendees of this biennial international conference. With over 160 exhibitors and many more delegates, this conference is a must for those involved in the filtering and particle industry. Exhibitors ranged from primary manufacturers of filter media, to those manufacturing finished product filters and producers of cutting edge particle monitors.

Did you realise that certifying products as asthma & allergy friendlyTM ensures that they are future proofed against some upgrades in legislation? We started testing for phthalates in toys with plastic components some years ago and toy manufacturers who certified their toys asthma & allergy friendlyTM have since enjoyed the benefits of not having to play catch up when phthalate testing became mandatory in North America in Feb 2009 (CPSIA, Section 108).

timyeomans   The last decade or so has seen an exponential increase in the amount of products that are sold or marketed as being environmentally friendly. This explosion of environmentally friendly products has created an interesting challenge in the cleaning products sector: Although some cleaning products may truly claim to be green, their safety in use for those with asthma and allergies is not as clear.
